Cabo San Lucas Adventures

Today we planned nothing. It was nice to get up when we wanted (7am for me, for an early run) and just get going at our leisure. Lee wanted to go back to the mall for a couple of things, so after some tasty veggie juice and coffee from downstairs, we ventured over to the marina. The mall was nice and quiet at 10 am so it was pretty quick to get things done.

By 11, I think we were at the beach. A lunch of salad and yummy corn tortillas at The Office was followed by some time laying on the beach. We though we'd be safe from the super annoying vendors by parking ourselves away from the crowds and against a hotel rope but, nope. They swarmed us! We only got away briefly during a quick dip in the near-frigid ocean. After repeating "no thanks" one too many times, we decided to head out to Lover's Beach. Negotiating with the taxi people ahead of time for our round trip wasn't nearly as successful as when Bryan does it but we did talk him down from $20 to roughly $17 for the two of us. Bryan would have gotten $12, I'm sure!

Watching the waves at Divorce Beach was amazing. I can never get over how powerful the water can be as it breaches and beats against the surf. Standing 30 feet from the water's edge, we were still touched by the aftermath of some huge waves. Apparently we left that side too soon because others saw whales playing out from the rocks later on.

Back at Medano, we found some lounge chairs at Billygan's, where 2-for-1 drinks were still the norm. Two Mai Tais and two PiƱa Coladas each letter, we had a good buzz on, ready for more fun and adventure! Our waiter there annoyed us though. Sitting in chairs 2 and 3 in a group of 8, he came along and, instead of asking if we'd mind moving over one chair because he had six people wanting to sit, he gruffly informed us to move. We asked if we could take our table, and were told, "No!" Luckily, a much nicer wait staff member came by and was much more agreeable and helpful. The worse (best) part was that two people sat down at the far end and after an hour, no one else ever showed up! I liked that restaurant a lot but that waiter really turned me off from it. They still have the best Mexican breakfast around though.

Lee has been talking a out getting a massage since we got here. We checked out the spa where the gym is located but $165 for 60 minutes is very steep. She found this little place on the street down to the beach with 50 minute massages for $45. So, we decided to try them out.

The massage place is right beside a busy local restaurant, and is accessed by heavy glass sliding doors. That's it. A dark curtain covers the doors because once you're inside, the two massage tables are right there! We shared an open room (thanks goodness, and now makes me wonder what would have happened if one had gone alone and another person wanted a massage). The massages were good, if a bit too rough, but we compared thoughts running through our heads after and I think we were both on the same page. Chloroform us to steal our money; felt a bit too exposed and perhaps borderline molested in some cases; perhaps just too close to the busy street where anyone could just come in...

However, we survived without incident so I'm chalking this up to yet another Mexican experience. The ladies were very good so I would still say give the, a try over the overpriced spa.

Tonight we set off for downtown with the intention of locating a couple of bars that are known for their hospitality, great food and reasonable prices. Happy Ending is just off the marina and is a long, narrow bar with mismatched tables, three bars, and dollar bills plastered all over the walls and pillars. Old 50's style metal signs and pin ups girl advertisements are hung throughout. Our waiter greeted us with a friendly smile and told us about their 2 beer or 1 margarita for $5. The menu is only Mexican pub-style food - quesadillas, burritos, tacos, guacamole. But, the prices were outstanding! I bought a bean and cheese burrito for $3! Despite Trip Advisor stating this as the #1 restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, it wasn't the best meal I've had here but the rest does boost this one higher up the charts. It's what you may call a neighbourhood gem, where locals and ex-pats alike relax after a hard day.

$3 Burrito - very good for Mexican pub food!
Super Burrito - only $8!

Next stop, the Canadian bar my scuba instructor told me about - Hooliganz. Owned by two Canadians from the Okanagan (Steph and Dennis, we spoke with Steph), its easy to walk by this small, yet homey little pub. Greeted by some obvious locals, we were quickly invited to join the regulars at the bar to talk about our trip, their life here and hockey. We met two guys originally from the US so we heated up some rivalry between them and us Canadians over tomorrow's Olympic game.

Look what I found in Hooliganz!!

It was fun to get away from the craziness of the tourist areas and catch a glimpse of what life could be like here. Hooliganz is definitely a bar I would return to on my next trips down here, just to feel at home and relaxed.

A lot of sun and a few too many drinks and I am ready for bed.
