Open Range - Classic Wild Game in Calgary

Looking for a step or two back in time?  Open Range is a quaint little restaurant in NE Calgary with wild west decor (wagon wheels in the corner, creaky wooden floors, bills that arrive in Louis L'Amour books...) and a thorough wild game menu.  Bison, boar, elk, and duck are available, along with traditional fare - beef, salmon and chicken.  For the adventurous yet unsure, the waiters give excellent descriptions and recommendations of any dish questioned.  Never has their information been incorrect yet during one of our experiences.

The music playing through the room's speakers is from another era - songs my parents remember listening to growing up.  So reminiscent is this atmosphere that they even began talking about when they first got refrigerators, running water, and even electricity into their homes as kids!  It's amazing to think that people didn't have these common conveniences even 70 years ago in some places in this country.  Oh have times changed!

Sunday evenings, Open Range offers a fixed price, 3-course meal, complete with a specially crafted appetizer, succulent entree, and a sweet dessert.  What's even better, they offer their entree for a specific price to those not interested in both the appetizer and dessert that is included.  I am fond of accommodating restaurants, those who understand people do not all have the exact same taste in food, wine, and other delicacies.

The Prime Rib dinner, for $49 per person, began with a small appetizer of prawns, duck pate, and bacon-wrapped scallop.  Three of each tried a different portion of this dish, and the consensus was that it was oh, so good!  Bryan ordered this dinner, and was amazing and very satisfied with his entree.  He must have thoroughly enjoyed it because he gobbled it up quite fast!

My Arctic Char dish with purple potatoes roasted to perfection, along with steamed vegetables, was superb!  The fish had a lovely crusted coating of herbs and spices, and was cooked through, leaving it tender and light.

For dessert, the Sunday meal came with bread pudding, smothered in whipped cream.  While whipped cream is not for me, personally, it was easy enough to remove to enjoy the lovely, lightly-sweetened pudding filled with warm, sliced apples.

Bryan and I switched desserts, as he's not a fan of bread pudding (what???), so instead he ordered their signature flourless chocolate torte.  Amazing!

This small, unique restaurant on Edmonton Trail is a great place to relax, enjoy some wine by the wonderfully warm fireplace, and dive into some new types of food for a different experience.  From the number of patrons who kept streaming in, it's obvious Open Range is becoming more popular than ever.

Prices are what you'd expect for a steakhouse - entrees average $28 each, while desserts are about $9.00.  The food is worth every penny.
