Longing for Sunshine and Beach on this Blizzardy Day

On this lovely day in Calgary, looking out my window at an apocalyptic winter scene, I am inclined to dream of some faraway place, wrought with feather-soft sand, aquamarine seawater, and glorious sunshine.  Writing a travel blog is tough if you aren't actually traveling, so I figured, why not ramble on about places too beautiful to imagine?  I'm great at daydreaming, after all!

The idea to explore a Polynesian island in the South Pacific came from one of my many solicitous emails that I receive daily.  Tikehau Island - never heard of it, have you?  Nicknamed "Pink Sand Island", one can only believe that you won't see traditional yellowish sand on the beaches.

Tikehau Island is a member of the Islands of Tahiti.  Known for its friendly people, lush gardens, and fragrant ocean air, Tikehau is thought to have the largest fish population of all the Tahitan islands.  In fact, this abundance of fish makes fishing the largest industry for the inhabitants of the island.

With just over 400 square miles of land, this island boasts a strong sense of pride in the beauty it presents.  Surrounded by water, many of the popular activities take place in and around the ocean.  The abundance of fish means scuba diving will be outstanding.  Fish large and small can be seen:  barracudas, jack fish, sea-pike, manta rays, and gray sharks.  If you want to see the manta rays, July through December offer the best times to catch these beauties.

Being such a small island, there is only one real resort at which to stay.  The Pearl Beach Resort offers beach bungalows with lagoon-side beachfront views as well as those quaint over-the-water bungalows, complete with glass floors.  With its raving reviews featuring relaxation and a getaway from hectic life, this resort provides the luxury of superb accommodations in a secluded, beautiful setting.  Food is prepared fresh for every meal, with tons of local ingredients.  Repetition is expected in such a remote location, but should be overlooked when you realize how close to paradise you have come!

My mood has lifted after reviewing dive shops and perusing pictures of this beautiful, tranquil island.  Sitting here in the drying heat from my furnace while a blizzard rages outside, I am intrigued by the wonderful sites that exist where I need to explore to determine which place seems best to settle down in for good.  Get me out of this cold and freezing weather!
