Toscana Italian Grill in Calgary

It seemed like it was time to try out another restaurant in Calgary featured on Open Table, and with my birthday just around the corner, it seemed fitting to try out Toscana Italian Grill.  After all, my favorite food is Italian and it seems like there are always new, tasty Italian spots opening up in this city.  Toscana is located well outside the downtown core, which is refreshing as parking was accessible and abundant.  This little gem is located in a strip mall which has an adjacent Italian market that definitely needs to be checked out.  

 Our Sunday evening event did not require the reservations I had made, but in order to get my Open Table points (and accumulate free rewards), it was necessary.  Walking into the restaurant, I was impressed by the simple, yet elegant decor, along with the muted lighting and large, open space of the dining area.  What did concern me, however, was that for a Sunday evening, they sure were short of customers!  Our party of 3 occupied the 5th table of patrons for the duration of our meal.  But, don't let the lack of customers deter you - just think of yourself as lucky to find a table at an outstanding restaurant before the masses figure out where great Italian food can be found!

 The evening began with some wine, along with their specialty appetizer - bocconcini with bread, covered in basil and olive oil.  It was to die for!  We also ordered their Feta Bruschetta, which came with the best Italian bread I have ever tasted!  It was nice and crunchy on the outside but oh so soft and warm in the center.  

 Our dinner entrees each consisted of pasta (of course).  While I didn't test out everyone else's meals, I can take their word that they were very impressed by their individual meals.  The sauce was extremely tomatoey with a hint of spice in my spaghetti pomodoro with meat sauce.

We found ourselves stuffed three-quarters of the way through our meal, so we didn't take part in their delectable dessert menu - next time!  Toscana Italian Grill was a wonderful birthday experience and I feel that this place will remain a favorite for some time!  Give it try!

Since completing my Advanced Open Water three weeks ago, I have been so excited to go on a dive to the depths of the ocean, having the ability to see wrecks and go inside caverns and tunnels, and to just experience so much more than what I could with my Open Water certification.  I spent the days working up to our trip to Kauai nagging Bryan, "which dives do you want to go on?  what days do you want to go"?  Eventually, I had to just say, "let's go!" Diving with the Sea Lions

Yes, we dove with the sea lions today!  Our two dives were amazing - the water was so warm that I did not even need a full wetsuit.  I was perfectly comfortable in a shortie, no boots or hood.  Unfortunately, the vest I bought in San Diego hasn't been used yet, but I'm sure somewhere down the road I'll need it.   We took a diving tour with Cabo Adventures , the sister to Vallarta Adventures with whom I was certified 2 years ago.  The dive masters, Roberto and Jenny, took great care of us and made sure our equipment worked properly and that we were geared up safely.  The first dive was called North Wall and we ended up near Sand Falls.  We were able to see some beautiful fish and other creatures, including a pregnant sea horse and a scary looking eel!  (It looked like a mean snake so of course I did not like that.)  The moray eel we saw looked ready to pounce so I got out of there fast, too.  The Sand Falls are awesome - it's literally a waterfall of sand down rocks wi

My Visit to Auschwitz / Birkenau

"Work Will Set You Free" - such a lie... :( December 16, 2020: We stepped out of the new and into the old…Foggy mist hung in the air, providing an appropriate melancholy aura to the site.  As we approached the infamous gate with its infamous phrase, I swallowed a growing lump in my throat.   So much death and horror had happened here… Yet, if you ignored the double barbed wire fence around the complex and had no clue about where you stood, it almost passed as an old academic site.  The brick building laid out symmetrically, each one connected by a narrow gravel and sand path.  Yes, without knowing the past, you could easily never know what had happened within the walls of the buildings.
