Jasper AGM 2012 (Reposted from August 2012)

Bryan and I booked ourselves a little getaway to Jasper this summer and I think we were both very happy to get away and relax. This trip also constituted our annual motorcycle trip, as the roads up to Jasper offer some amazing views and great biking roads. But, after two days of 8 hours on the bikes, we are both happy not to get back on them for a few days.

I love Jasper. It's a beautiful little town set amidst these wonderful mountains, with lakes so close by. We were easily able to wander around the town and take in all it had to offer.

Our first night there we were both tired but eager to explore. For dinner we stopped at a steakhouse called "Something Else" and we were both pleasantly surprised at the food quality and service. After dinner, we walked some more and decided to try out the Jasper Brewing Company brewpub. Their menu states that they offer a seasonal brew that changes every month, so my adventurousness kicked in and I had to see what they had to offer. My first sip was "Wow!". First impression? I didn't need dessert that night! The beer was fruity and light, almost like a smoothie, and went down smoothly. I couldn't stop drinking it. Bryan tried a sip and was hooked for the night as well. When asked about the flavor, it was blueberry-vanilla. Yum! Now I want to see if it's sold here.

We spent two nights in Jasper so thankfully we did get one full day off the bikes. We decided to hike on one of the many different pathways that lead right out of town. I wanted to go to Pyramid Lake but Bryan thought that was too far so we set out to see just how far we made it. An hour later, we were at Pyramid Lake, where there are a bunch of cabins, a restaurant and a beautiful mountain lake, all apart of Pyramid Lake Resort. For a short break, we rented a canoe and paddled around the lake for awhile.

Upon our return to town, we were both starving and thought we should check out this awesome smelling pizza place we had walked by the night before. Simply called Jasper Pizza Place, it offers individual pizzas with fresh dough and ingredients in a wide variety of toppings. Their rooftop patio was comfortable and sunny, so we enjoyed pizza and beer after our hike.

As it was extremely hot, we decided a break or nap was needed and headed back to our hotel, Maligne Lodge. An alright accommodation, it needs a bit of a facelift, and it would have been nice to have one queen bed rather than two doubles, as they were so small we actually couldn't both sleep in one.

After our refreshing naps and showers, we went searching for dinner. I had read of a great Italian restaurant and noticed that they served mussels. While not expecting the same quality, I am searching for top-notch mussels that are close to par with what I had in Italy.

We arrived at Cassio's without a reservation and were told they didn't have anything that night, initially. However, she must have felt bad for us and found room for two tucked in a corner. While she apologized for the location, Bryan and I were quite happy where we were.

The service was great, and our meals very tasty. They explained how the kitchen was short staffed but we were happy to take a long, leisurely dinner so it all worked out. Mussels and clams were our appetizer, and I was thrilled that the fish was tender and fresh. The tomato sauce was good, but not Mediterranean great. Still, it was yummy!

Bryan had gnocchi with sausage and pork bolognese sauce, and I tried linguine with shrimp. Our meals were delectable, if only slightly too large! To all those who recommended this place on Trip Advisor, you did well!
