Blue House Cafe - Extraordinary Latin Cuisine

A lot of people haven't even heard of the Blue House Cafe in northwest Calgary.  And you may have even driven past the tiny strip mall on the corner of Northmount and 19th Street and not noticed the nondescript sign for this gem.  Tucked into the furthest corner of the mall, overwhelmed by the flashy outdoors shop with it's brightly colored clothing and accessories, Blue House Cafe, at first glance, appears to be just another attempt at a neighborhood restaurant.  Aside from the fish in its logo, you may not even guess that Blue House Cafe serves some of the freshest, most authentically tasting seafood in Calgary.

Through word-of-mouth, I heard that Blue House Cafe was an amazing restaurant with great decor, ambiance and food.  My first visit did not disappoint, so my second visit more recently was filled with high expectations.  We included an additional person in our reservation, informing him how he would be fully satisfied and impressed with the food and overall experience.

Every expectation and promise we made was definitely met on this second rewarding visit to Blue House Cafe.

You walk into a small entryway that immediately opens into a small dining area on the left.  To the right through another archway, there is a slightly larger space filled with tables, chairs so close they touch those behind them.  While the tables are packed in tight, you still feel as though you have your own secluded area.  Live music kept us entertained (though I don't know if this is on every night of the week) with Spanish-language melodies.

Our meals were all divine!  My soup, a special creation for that evening, was a crab coconut chowder, with bite-sized potatoes and carrots in a lightly tasting creamy broth.  The coconut flavor was minute, but still detectable, making this one of the best home-made soups I have ever tasted.

For dinner, I chose the Pollo a la Naranja, simply because the description stated that the orange sauce was incredible!  The chicken was perfectly cooked, and the sauce really was amazing!  The dish included a side of vegetables, making it a relatively healthy option while still being absolutely delicious.

Bryan chose to try their ceviche with the chorizo sausages and he couldn't get enough.  He was so impressed he wanted to have an entire meal of this dish!  His main dish, the Paila Marina, provided him with some of the best seafood he has ever tasted.  Pretty impressive for a landlocked city!  Calamari, scallops, lobster, crab legs...the dish is rich with a melange of superior fruits of the sea!

We appreciated how our waiter accommodated Bryan's allergy to shrimp with my craving for the little creatures by having the cook place his shrimp on my plate along with my chicken, too!  In fact, our waiter deserves glory for how friendly and efficient he was, giving us a number of opinions and recommendations on what to order, and making sure we were happy and satisfied throughout the entire meal.
